My At-Work Gratitude List

By Kate Harold | November 18, 2025

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’ve been thinking about what I’m thankful for related to my work life. For me, that means the fields of writing, editing, proofreading, marketing and communications, and health care. It also means not only freelancing, but working in corporate America, which I did for years before I started freelancing.

A time to be grateful

Here’s what I came up with.

In my work life, I’m thankful:

  1. For working with others who value and champion high-quality communications.
  2. For the opportunity to learn so much about so many topics through my work, from how to help kids who are afraid of the dark to complex pediatric surgeries.
  3. That I’ve been in the field long enough to experience both print and digital communications, and appreciate the nuances, benefits and drawbacks of each.
  4. That while the field of communications keeps changing, there is still a need for clear, well-written messages and the people behind those messages.
  5. For being part of a community of communications professionals who are smart, kind, and generous with their time, insights and experience.
  6. For having worked with designers and print reps who are so creative and love print communications as much as I do.
  7. For having had the chance to tell stories that inspire, give hope and lift up kids who have had to live through really hard things.
  8. That I have had the opportunity to be an employee as well as a business owner, as both have brought rich and varied experiences to my work.

Have you ever written an at-work gratitude list? Here are some questions that might help get you started:

  • What’s something new that you’re glad you’ve learned at work this year?
  • What’s the best work-related thing that has happened for you this month?
  • What did you appreciate at work today?

Something You Might Not Know About Me…

I once attended a class in a cadaver lab at University of Cincinnati as part of on-the-job training. It was fascinating and definitely gave me an appreciation for those who donate their bodies to science.
